بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ١I swear by this city, Makkah - 1
وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ٢And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city - 2
وَوَالِدٖ وَمَا وَلَدَ٣And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], 3
لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ فِي كَبَدٍ٤We have certainly created man into hardship. 4
أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ أَحَدٞ٥Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5
يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالٗا لُّبَدًا٦He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6
أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّمۡ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ٧Does he think that no one has seen him? 7
أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُۥ عَيۡنَيۡنِ٨Have We not made for him two eyes? 8
وَلِسَانٗا وَشَفَتَيۡنِ٩And a tongue and two lips? 9
وَهَدَيۡنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ١٠And have shown him the two ways? 10
فَلَا ٱقۡتَحَمَ ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ١١But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11
وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡعَقَبَةُ١٢And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass? 12
فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ١٣It is the freeing of a slave 13
أَوۡ إِطۡعَٰمٞ فِي يَوۡمٖ ذِي مَسۡغَبَةٖ١٤Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14
يَتِيمٗا ذَا مَقۡرَبَةٍ١٥An orphan of near relationship 15
أَوۡ مِسۡكِينٗا ذَا مَتۡرَبَةٖ١٦Or a needy person in misery 16
ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِ١٧And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. 17
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ١٨Those are the companions of the right. 18
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِــَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمۡ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡــَٔمَةِ١٩But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left. 19
عَلَيۡهِمۡ نَارٞ مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢ٢٠Over them will be fire closed in. 20
